Caring For Gold Jewelry
With gold at record prices of over $1300US per ounce and with some experts predicting prices going all the way to $2000, your gold jewelry is worth quite a bit of money, and proper care and cleaning are a must if you want to maintain its value and keep it functional. Here are five ideas that can help.
Watch Out for Scratches
Above all, pure gold is a soft material and is prone to scratches. Most gold jewelry has copper or silver mixed in it to add strength, but these alloys are not immune from scratches either. The best policy is to remove gold jewelry if you are going to participate in sports, play with children, or work outside in the yard.
Avoid Chlorine
Gold is adversely affected by a number of chemicals, in particular chlorine. Constant exposure to chlorine will cause gold to weaken and eventually break. So take off your gold jewelry before going into swimming pools or hot tubs.
Household Cleaning Products
Chlorine is not the only chemical that can adversely affect gold jewelry. Other common household cleaners that are abrasive or contain strong acids or bases can also weaken gold jewelry over time. Either remove your gold jewelry when using household cleaners or wear a pair of rubber gloves to protect it.
Periodically Inspect Your Jewelry
It is a wise idea to take a close look at your jewelry and check it out for wear and tear or weakness. Pay particular attention to small pieces and things like clasps, pins, or prongs. If you see that a piece is showing wear it is best to take it to a professional jeweler to have it repaired.
Careful Storage
Make sure to store gold jewelry items in such a way that pieces don’t come in contact with each other. Wrap your gold pieces separately to ensure this is the case. If you have a cloth-lined jewelry case that has small compartments to store individual pieces, be sure to take advantage of that.
